Learning through the Arts

Learning through the Arts allows students to make specific and essential contributions to their intellectual and aesthetic developments. It allows learners to explore their feelings and values, to develop physical and perceptual skills and focuses on collaboration and looking within. The arts help students to make meaning of many different aspects of life and to make connections between themselves and others. It stimulates imagination.

Learning through the Arts, provides students with the opportunity to learn how to think imaginatively, identify and solve problems, empathize with others, think critically, communicate effectively and appreciate the skills and accomplishments of others.

Learning through the Arts in a collaborative community, encourages self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of identity for our students.

At Baythorn, we believe that arts-related learning experiences, make learning more effective and satisfying for children regardless of their talent in the arts. Our belief is that knowledge of music, dance, drama, and visual arts contribute significantly to the development of well-rounded students. The arts are central to our school's teaching and learning and where possible and practical, the arts are used in teaching and reinforcing skills and concepts in other subjects. In addition, students benefit from this enriched program.

The impact of the arts on achievement is worthwhile but it is important to note that it contributes to so much more when looking at the whole child.

Learning through the Arts goes beyond creating more successful students.

We believe that it creates more successful human beings.

Arts@Baythorn is an Integrated Arts program where students learn different subjects using the arts.

Arts@Baythorn focuses a great deal of Collaborative Learning. For example; in Math - Geometry, we combine art, math, drama and music when we design puppets using 3D shapes! Students then use the puppets to present their knowledge of “faces, edges, and vertices” through song! This can be done in collaboration with other students where they plan, organize and present their understanding of these Math concepts as a team.

Students participate in all disciplines of music, visual arts, drama and dance. Students do not need to have talent in any particular art discipline, just an affinity for theArts.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are my work habits? How do I enjoy learning? Am I responsible, do I get learning tasks done and on time, and can I work well collaboratively?
  • Are my childʼs needs already being met by their home school? (accommodations, modifications, French Immersion, etc.) Does my child need a great deal of support to learn? Is my child ready for this enriched program?
  • Do I enjoy the arts? Do I enjoy being around others who like to learn like me?

Students who benefit most from the Arts@Baythorn tend to have the following attributes & learning skills:

  • Approaches new tasks with confidence
  • Enjoys learning and expressing themselves through the arts
  • Enjoys working in a team and shares the work equitably
  • Has strong organizational and time management skills and can manage a rotary timetable
